Summer

The sun over Oberstdorf – summer in the mountains

Local summer activities include a variety of cultural and sporting events. The eclectic „Oberstdorfer Musiksommerfestival, for example, attracts guests from all over the world every year with its masterful concerts. Every summer you can enjoy virtuoso sounds in a festival setting and, if you are interested in taking part in a masterclass, you will soon be able to produce them yourself.

The ice rink at the foot of the Kühberg opens its doors to all skating artists.

But lovers of well-tended greens will also get their money’s worth here in Oberstdorf, where you will find Germany’s southernmost golf club, right on the Kühberg. Play on the varied 9-hole course against a spectacular mountain backdrop that guarantees you a fantastic time.

If you want more, there are two 18-hole golf courses and a 6-hole short course at the Sonnenalp-Oberallgäu Golf Resort about 20 minutes away.

High-flying or down-to-earth?

There are lots of hiking and climbing routes in the area to explore on foot.

Regardless of whether you are an active mountaineer or a pleasure hiker, Oberstdorf offers an extensive network of trails for all your needs. Countless routes up to the peaks and down to the valleys start right in front of our hotel.

You can cover over 2000 meters in a day tour with the right equipment – fixed rope routes provide additional adrenaline. The lofty heights can also be explored with experienced mountaineers. But shorter, easier tours to our “green” mountain peaks are always worthwhile.

Not high enough yet? Then a tandem paragliding flight is exactly what you are looking for! When the weather is clear, you see their colorful sails frolic over the Kühberg as splashes of colour. Should you be tempted to venture into the air yourself, experienced tandem pilots are ready to help you conquer the sky.

If you want to take it easy, choose one of the valleys towards Trettach or Stillach, where endless hiking trails lead past cozy refreshment stops and make for nice day tours. The mud bath on the idyllic high plateau and the various seasonal gourmet markets bring added entertainment to your stay.

Or how about a carriage ride in the Oytal? Romantic trips through idyllic landscapes invite you to daydream, and night trips can also be booked on request.

Tip: After a long mountain hike or walk, you have the option of renting a scooter from the Berggasthof Oytalhaus for the five-kilometer journey back into the valley. Of course, protective helmets are also available for you! You can then park the scooters directly in front of our hotel, where they will be picked up again.

Experience the Allgäu on two wheel

Exploring the picturesque valleys of the Allgäu on foot is wonderful, but it is perhaps even better to get to know it by mountain bike or e-bike. Covering many kilometers with ease, you will find straight roads, hilly forest paths, and easy and steep climbs.

Whether you have gone for a sporty challenge or a leisurely ride, cycling down into the Kleinwalsertal or along the Trettach to the source of the Iller in the direction of Fischen; we have numerous bike paths for all needs.

At the hotel, you can borrow and test the new Trek E-bikes (fully and hardtail Mountainbike) extensively.

Leave stress and everyday life behind you, discover the wonders of nature and enjoy the feeling of doing something good for yourself!

Lakes

What could be nicer on hot days than to refresh yourself in cool lake water – even if it’s only your feet that dangle in the water after a hike!

A special feature of the region are the many mountain lakes, rushing streams, waterfalls and ravines that shape our landscape: welcome “vestiges” of the last ice age. As the glaciers melted, the remaining moraine material formed hollows in the earth’s surface, which then filled with water.

Christlessee, Moorweiher, Freibergsee, Altenbach, Oybach and many more beautiful destinations are within easy hiking distance. Once at such a lake, you will surely want to linger as long as you can.

The turquoise-blue mountain lakes, such as Gaissalpsee, Seealpsee and Guggersee, on the other hand, require a demanding mountain tour, but they never disappoint.

Alpine life and tradition

We Oberstdorfers live very traditional lives, close to nature. Agriculture is still widespread and is usually inherited within families. Dairy cattle are predominantly kept in the region. In the summer months, the young cattle are taken up high into the mountains.

It is therefore quite common for you to walk through herds of cattle while on a mountain tour. The Alps are often run by the younger members of local families who live there for the Summer. A rest is always worthwhile and you can reward the ascent with homemade cakes, fresh milk and a hearty “cheese bread”. Some of the Alps are Sennalpen. Here, in summer, they make their own mountain cheeses and fresh alpine butter.

At the close of summer, in mid-September, the families and their livestock return to the valley. This event is a special occasion in the area. The return of the cattle and their owners has become a festive procession where they are greeted by locals and visitors as they head to the stables in the village.
